Why: Words have no Meaning

Why Words make no sense

Check out These Examples, below.

Each word, phrase, or anecdote demonstrates: some aspect of - Communication Failure.

These are (only) random examples. (This Collection will be added to, occasionally.)

Light Brigade

There was a famous (accidental) Suicide Mission, from The 1854 Crimean War.

Basically: over 100 Soldiers got killed. Due to: a misunderstanding about Words.

  • The Commander was positioned: high up, on a hill.
  • From The Hill, you could see: The (entire) Battlefield.
  • Including some of The Enemy retreating. With: some captured artillery.
  • The Commander sent an order, for The Cavalry to: "advance rapidly to The Front – follow the enemy and try to prevent the enemy carrying away The Guns" (artillery).
  • The Cavalry were in The Valley
  • They could (only) see a prepared (array) of Artillery. And, These were a part of The Front.
  • These Guns were not retreating. However: The Order didn't say They were. It said; "prevent the enemy carrying away The Guns". They might be planning to retreat...
  • So: The Cavalry charged The Prepared Defensive Position.
  • And: The Cavalry were destroyed.

This Failure, has been turned into: (bad) Poetry, (some, ok) Films, and (loads of) History Books.

Conclusion:

Even if you are careful about what you write: Misunderstandings are inevitable.

Bricks

There is a story, about: The Pointlessness of Philosophy. It is a story about: an Ordinary Person, who overhears Philosophers discussing Bricks.

Why would These Idiots be getting paid: to discuss if Bricks are Real? So, to show that Bricks are real: throws one at Their Heads.

The Origin of This Story:

In (The Nuclear Physicist) Richard Feynman's (1985) Autobiography: "Surely You're Joking, Mr. Feynman!", He said about: sitting in on a Philosophy Seminar, at Princeton University.

The Philosophers were debating whether an electron could be considered an "essential object." Meaning: did it have - an independent, objective reality

One of The Philosophers asked Feynman, for: His Opinion.

He hadn't read The Assigned Text. So: He decided to reframe the question with an analogy

His plan was to ask a series of questions:

  1. "Is a brick an essential object?" He anticipated they would say "yes."
  2. "What about the inside of a brick?" He would point out, that: You only see the surface, till: you break it. (Then: it is no longer a brick. It is: 2 half bricks.)
  3. The Point: The idea that a brick has an "inside" is a theory that helps us (try to) understand the world,

He never got to: Point 2.

Because, The Philosophers got (so) enthusiastic about: "Is a brick an essential object?"

People added The "Common Sense" (Brick Throwing) bit, later. After The Story spread into Culture.

Conclusion:

Even (basic) Physical Objects are more complicated than "Common Sense".

And: people like to add Their slant, to any story. Even, if: it changes The (original) Meaning. Which shows: They weren't (really) listening.

Conspiracy

This is (currently) a popular word.

Original Meaning:

Like most English Words: it has an Indo-European origin. It is made from 2 Proto Indo-European words:

  • Con, meaning: together. (It is often spelt Com, instead.) Other examples: Compact, Concent.
  • Spire, meaning: breathe. Other examples: Respiration, Expire.

So: every time You are in a: Room, Bus, Train, etc. You are part of a Conspiracy. Because: You are breathing the same air.

General Meaning:

It is (now, mostly) used to: dismiss Ideas. Like:

  • Who killed J. F. Kennedy, and why.
  • Or, did NASA get to The Moon, or not.
  • Or, Covid-19 was a Plan to restrict Everyone's freedom. (Instead of, being caused by: no plan. And: letting Jet Set Types spread Disease. Because: They are "important".)

Legal Meaning:

Conspiracy has a (more important) Legal meaning:

  • a person who conspires, whether in the State or elsewhere, with one or more persons to do an act —
    • in The State that constitutes a serious offence, or
    • in a place outside The State that constitutes a serious offence under the law of that place and which would, if done in The State, constitute a serious offence,.
  • is guilty of an offence irrespective of whether such act actually takes place or not.

Which is (basically) Thought-Crime.

Because: The Courts will accept Verbal Assurance from Law Enforcement, that: They belive The (alleged) Conspiracy happened.

Conclusion:

The Word has shifted far from it's Original Meaning. And: it has many different meanings.

And: The Common, and Legal, meanings (both) are used to help Powerful People maintain Their Power. Either: by confusing The Facts. Or: by letting The Courts to imprison People, with no (physical) evidence.

Identity

Origin:

Another word, with: a Indo-European origin. Though: it came in to English through The Latin Word: Idem (meaning - The Same).

  • Id: was Latin for - That One.
  • -dem: a demonstrative suffix.

So: it's (correct) meaning is: Sameness. Which, is: a comparison. You can't own a comparison.

Yet: people talk about; "My Identity". Like it is: something They have.

Identity Politics:

The Word Politics is from: The Greek Word: Polis (meaning City). So: Identity Politics = The same City affairs.

Somehow This is an excuse for; herds of The Deluded to fight each-other, in - the streets, "academic" papers. social media, etc..

Conclusion:

Again, The Word has shifted far from it's Original Meaning. People don't undestand The True Meaning. And, use words as a Coded Grunt.

It shows: The Emptiness of Communication, Politics, Dictionaries, etc..
